Maximising your process safety metrics

Process safety and plant integrity can be supported by the thorough application for both lagging and leading indicators, or metrics. These are as useful as the knowledge of their practical application as well as the limitations.

What is very common for every organisation is the need to understand what processes or systems are important to manage process safety and then monitor and verify them. This should be a combination of testing, inspection, metrics, both lead and lag, as well as audit. Plant managers should have a clear understanding of what they measure and more importantly, why. Then they need to use the information gathered to make informed decisions.
