No injuries were reported following a fire at an alcohol tank at International-Matex Tank Terminals’ (IMTT) facility in Bayonne, New Jersey, US, on 7 October 2021.
The fire broke out at around 4.57pm local time and was finally brought under control at 6.26pm. Bayonne fire chief Keith Weaver says in a statement that the storage tank was on fire following an explosion within the tank. It contained approximately 600 gallons (2,271 L) of ‘an alcohol product’ at the time. Bayonne crews worked in conjunction with IMTT’s own fire department to fight the fire. They applied foam to the burning tank, and water to the surrounding tanks for cooling, to prevent the fire spreading.
The Hudson Regional Health Commission attended the fire to monitor operations and clean-up. Bayonne fire investigators determined that the cause of the fire was accidental.
‘I would like to thank and commend the members of the Bayonne Fire Department and the IMTT Fire Department for their outstanding work at the scene that prevented the fire from spreading further within the facility,’ says Weaver.
IMTT has not commented on the incident.
