Indonesian refiner Pertamina says that fire crews have successfully extinguished a fire in a benzene tank bund at its 270,000 bpd Cilacap refinery in Central Java, Indonesia.
The fire broke out in tank area 39 at around 7.45pm local time on 11 June 2021, and around 50 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Crews used foam to tackle the fire in the 3000 bbl tank and cool surrounding tanks. The fire was out at 10.50am local time on 13 June 2021. The tank which caught fire was about a third full, containing 1,100 bbl of benzene. Pertamina says there were no casualties as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire is currently unknown but Pertamina will carry out an internal investigation.
Pertamina says that the fire did not affect local residents as the location of the fire was deep within the refinery complex, far from residential areas and roads. Refinery operations and fuel supplies were unaffected.
The fire is the second tank fire for Pertamina in recent months. On 29 March 2021, a large fire broke out in a tank bund at its 125,000 bpd Balongan Refinery in West Java and burned for two days before being extinguished.
