Militant Islamist group Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for a missile attack that struck a fuel storage tank and caused a large fire at the Siniya refinery in northern Iraq on 29 November 2020.
According to Reuters, IS says that it used two Katyusha rockets in the attack, which resulted in the shutdown of the 30,000 bpd refinery, owned by the Northern Refineries Company, after the blaze spread to the pipeline network. No injuries were reported and the fire was controlled. Operations are expected to resume once the damage has been assessed.
The Iraqi oil ministry confirmed that the refinery site had been hit by a missile, and that it would launch an investigation into the attack
