Two people have been injured following an oil tank explosion at the Pelican Island Storage Terminal in Galveston, Texas, US on 19 May 2020.
The explosion was reported around 15:20 CDT. The terminal is owned by Wood Point Terminals, but the company is yet to make a public statement. Local media reports that crews were welding near a tank containing 2m gallons (7,570 m3) of heavy crude products when the tank exploded, although the exact cause is under investigation. The workers’ injuries are not thought be life-threatening.
Fire trucks used foam cannons to put out the subsequent fire.
Pelican Island Storage Terminal has a total capacity of 2m bbl.
