US city Apple Valley has closed 4 municipal wells near the Magellan tank farm after an estimated 63,000-gallon petrol leak was discovered on February 14. These wells are to be tested for contamination by the Minnesota Department of Health.
Fortunately the leak was contained by an earthen berm surrounding the tank. Due to this, focus is on clearing the fuel that has seeped into the soil.
It has been estimated by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency that approximately 58,000 gallons remains in the ground. Reports suggest that the fuel could be as deep as 40 feet – groundwater supply begins at around 70 feet, the nearest city well at 500.
Magellan intends to install special wells that will draw the gas from the ground.
