Vopak, the international tank storage company, is to increase its tank capacity at the port of Rotterdam by 500,000m³.
Vopak said in its financial results announcement for 2011 that they did not have many options in using more of its current capacity and that the best way to improve was to increase the amount of its storage.
In areas of the Rotterdam Port, such as at the Europoort terminal, one of the largest in the world for mineral oil products, Vopak is building four tanks with a joint capacity of 160,000m³.
At the Maasvlakte Oil Terminal (MOT), 360,000m³ is being constructed. Although Vopak is only one of the six shareholders in the MOT, it will use the entire facility.
Vopak’s capacity at the port is currently 4.5 million m³ spread out through 39 tanks, each containing 112,000m³ and once the new construction is completed, the MOT could possibly be the biggest terminal in the world for crude oil.
Previously theses two terminals were to be built in Maasvlakte in the Netherlands but because of the increasing exports from countries such as Russia and the Middle East, tankers are larger and need bigger ports, hence the Rotterdam Port was chosen.
