The Town of Apex in North Carolina, US, has approved a 139,037m³ Motiva fuel tank storage facility for a 4 hectare site.
Currently the site features six fuel storage tanks, which range in size holding between 16,000 – 32,000 barrels, as well as offices, warehousing and a fuelling station for trucks.
The new tank will hold 81,000 barrels and will increase Motiva’s storage capacity by 60%.
In order for the expansion to be approved, Apex Fire and the EMS Department met with Motiva to discuss the impact of the new storage tank on the area. They decided that new safety measures will need to be implemented in order for the site to reduce the risk of a fire.
Following this, Motiva says it will add more fire fighting foam to the local department for the use in any potential fires. Although Motiva has experienced explosions at its other terminals, there has never been an incident at the Apex site.
At the council meeting, concern was expressed by locals living in the area because they were worried about the security, traffic and location of the tank in relation to the main road. Motiva says it took on board what their neighbours said and as a result has decided to more the proposed tank 4.5m further back from the road in comparison to its original plans.
However, the council estimates that the new storage facility will increase traffic to the site by more than 50 trips a day although this would not exceed the traffic requirement levels for the area.
Following a report into the development, the council voted 3 – 2 in favour of the development.
