A pipeline at oil company Essos marine terminal in Fawley, UK, began to leak oil on 20 June 2010 as a ship was being unloaded.
According to Esso the unloading was ceased and work on cleaning up the lose oil began immediately.
We immediately deployed our local oil spill response procedures and informed the harbour master and the relevant environmental agencies, said a spokesperson for Esso.
However, despite the companys best efforts, oil has now been found washing up on some Hampshire beaches between the shorelines of Warsash and Solent Breezes.
It is still unknown how much oil has leaked. The spokesperson explained: We are collecting any residual oil from the leak site until the pipe can be drained completely. The exact amount of oil spilled is being assessed.
Esso will continue to check for leaked oil along Southampton Water and the Solent shorelines but Fareham Borough Council are advising the locals to stay away from the contaminated beaches.
