Montana-based Provident Energy Associates has been placed on an 18-month probation and fined $15,000 (12,322) after 18 migratory birds died in a pond of oil that leaked from its storage tank.
Provident Energy Associates pleaded guilty to violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. U.S. In September 2008 oil sludge began to leak from a long-existing hole in a storage tank at Provident's Two-Medicine Cut Bank Sand Unit. The oil formed a 10 by 20 foot pond.
Prosecutors say new leadership at the company has remedied the equipment and personnel problems that caused the bird deaths.
