The first phase of a plan to move storage tanks over the River Mersey in Liverpool, UK, has been completed.
Liverpool Bulk Liquids, which acquired storage tanks on the former Mobil site in June 2009 in Birkenheads West Float Dock, has begun moving capacity to its West Langton Dock site in Bootle.
The company specialises in storing and processing bulk liquids, such as vegetable oil.
The first phase increases capacity by 120% from 4,000 m3 to 9,000 m3 after shipping 12 storage tanks aboard the Mersey Docks and Harbour Companys floating crane, the Mersey Mammoth. The largest tanks were 16 metres in diameter and 10 metres in height and could only be moved by water.
It now means the operation can handle 100,000 tonnes of bulk liquids a year, which will increase to 200,000 tonnes when eight larger tanks are shipped in two more phases for a total refurbishment and relocation cost of £500,000 (553,000).
The company is talking with six potential customers to use the enlarged facility.
