A leak from an underground storage tank, which ejected almost 150,000 gallons of diesel in Adak, western Alaska, US, is finally under control with clean-up operations underway.
The tank was overfilled and released 142,800 gallons of fuel as it was being filled by a tanker. While most of the fuel was absorbed into the ground, around 1,000 gallons leaked into a small boat harbour.
Adak Petroleum personnel stopped the leak from the full 4.78 million gallon tank. The company deployed 1,100 feet of hard boom and 75 feet of sausage boom.
The exact cause of the spill is being investigated.
