Fire fighters will stage an emergency close to the site of the 2005 Buncefield depot explosion today.
Crews will shut down and evacuate BPs oil terminal between 1pm and 4pm today as they test fire safety procedures devised by the company. Ten engines will be called to tackle a jet fuel fire at one of the tanks.
The exercise is the first to be trialled since the terminal reopened last year following the explosion at the nearby HOSL depot. If the plan works it will be formally adopted.
The exercise will examine and evaluate fixed equipment put in place by BP and the availability of water supplies. It will also test the ability of the fire service to respond to other emergencies when such a large amount of resources are tied up.
BP storage manager Martin Coleman said changes and improvements made to the site had cost millions of pounds.
