The Kuwait Oil Co. (KOC) has received permission to build a new oil terminal in Abu Halifa, east of the Al Maqwa oil field and just north of the countrys existing oil export facility at Mina al Ahmadi.
Kuwait City Municipality had refused an earlier proposal submitted in May 2009, citing environmental concerns, specifically the closeness of the facilities to residential areas and a state-run coffee shop.
The new proposal was tailored specifically to take account of these concerns. Ships will dock 300m from the shore at a platform stretching 140m along the shoreline. The facilities will occupy a total area of 28,300m2, with a 30m buffer zone between the facilities and any residential areas.
