Halifax Capital Bhd, (formerly Setron Malaysia Bhd) plans to build and operate a new crude palm oil (CPO) terminal on the island of Penebang, offshore from the provincial capital of Ketapang, in the Kalimantan province of Indonesia.
The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the provincial government of Ketapang for a 33-year concession for the project, which involves building a port, a terminal and storage facility mainly to handle CPO.
The port is expected to be ready for operation in the first quarter of 2007, and will be the first port designed to handle CPO in this area, which contains the world's largest palm oil plantations. Currently, plantations have to tranship their CPO on small barges to ports in Sumatra, for loading onto large carriers.
The proposed port area will have depth of 12m and be capable of handling large crude carriers of up to 50,000 tonnes.
