AUTOMATING HEALTH AND SAFETY SYSTEMS IN THE TANK STORAGE INDUSTRY
No one can doubt the critical importance that health and safety plays in the tank storage industry. However, even the most safety-conscious organisations can sometimes feel swamped with the processes and paperwork that surround health and safety good practice. It is no longer enough to operate in a safe manner on a day-today basis; all organizations must now be able to prove their past and current compliance with health and safety regulations.

TERMINAL AUTOMATION: BENEFITS AND FUTURE OUTLOOK
Just a few years ago, the biggest problem a bulk terminal operator had to worry about was successfully getting a handful of products in and out of the facility. Terminal automation systems were designed around handling this in a straight-forward fashion. Times have changed.

NEW YORK CITY BREAK
Recent tax breaks for the use of renewable fuels for home heating use introduced in New York City have seen fuel suppliers scrambling to update their
storage and distribution facilities to enable them to take advantage and supply
customers looking to 'green up' their fuel usage.

TERMINAL AUTOMATION REVISITED
In the last few years, corporate systems requirements have undergone revolutionary changes. Sparked by lean production, globalisation, and the internet, corporations are increasingly elements in collaborative supply chains instead of freestanding, inward-looking, autonomous entities.
Today, effective operation requires agile response to unanticipated changes.

TANK ROOFS AND SEALS
There is a variety of roofing solutions for storage tanks - and a variety of ways to seal them from outside elements and for emissions control.
Jess White offers an overview of the types and methods available.

FLOATING ROOF SEAL TYPES AND SELECTION GUIDANCE
Above ground storage tanks come in all shapes and sizes. Some tanks have fixed roofs, some are open-top with external floating roofs (EFR), and others have fixed roofs or covers with internal floating roofs (IFR). A key element in controlling emissions in an above ground storage tank is having a high quality
perimeter seal on the floating roofs.

TANK SEALS FOR EXTERNAL FLOATING ROOFS, DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE
For decades external floating roofs have represented the preferred way of storing hydrocarbons as crude oil, gasoline, and many related products stored before or after refining.

VAPOUR RECOVERY AND EQUIPMENT
During loading of bulk liquid tankers or barges, the liquid introduced displaces vapours from previous cargoes that still exist in the tank and those vapours generated by the current cargo loading. The vapours of certain cargoes contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that include hydrocarbons, oxygenated hydrocarbons, and organic compounds containing nitrogen or sulphur.
Oil and petrol are valuable commodities.

MARINE VAPOUR CONTROL SYSTEMS
Two common methods for controlling the emission of vapours from product storage and transfer operations include vapour recovery units (VRUs) and vapour combustion units (VCUs).

LOADING ARMS AND HOSES
Marine loading arms first made their introduction back in the 1950's, these original designs consisting of a basic articulated pipe to load and unload liquids and gases from ship to shore.
Since then, the technology has advanced considerably as many manufacturers have entered the market resulting from the increase in global demand for oil and gas products.
