Tank roofs and seals

There is a variety of roofing solutions for storage tanks – and a variety of ways to seal them from outside elements and for emissions control.

Jess White offers an overview of the types and methods available.

There are a variety of methods for sealing the roofs of above-ground storage tanks. The challenge is increasingly difficult to find a suitable yet cost-effective solution that addresses environmental regulations for the storage of petroleum and other chemicals in different parts of the world.

Roof systems for aboveground storage tanks need to be able to meet their operational needs efficiently whilst also addressing environmental, safety and aesthetic issues. They have to be able to keep odours and emissions in, and also keep rain, wind and airborne (or other) contaminants out. Roof seals, therefore, play a very important part in the success of meeting these objectives.

The choice of material for a tank roof seal is important as it has to withstand the stored product, exposure to the sun and rainwater contact. Seals can be manufactured in a wide variety of materials, including different grades of aluminium, galvanised steel, stainless steel and polymer materials.
